Paint Flowers in the Garden-Tuesday August 26th, 1-5 pm, Kittery, ME

$105.00

Join Amy and paint local late summer flowers in the natural landscape at Nooney Farm in Kittery, Maine. Think sunflowers, rudbeckia, zinnias, and dahlias! Amy will work in oil but you are welcome to work in the medium of your choice.

Amy will demo in oil and then participants will work at the farm on one or two paintings. Amy will provide feedback on all work made during the workshop.

You might even walk away with a bouquet of flowers, courtesy of the farm, at the end of the day.

Supply list is enclosed; plan to provide all of your own equipment (easel, seat, palette, paints, brushes, etc.).

Nooney Farm is a 30 acre flower and vegetable farm devoted to producing organic local produce, educating the public, hosting performances and a variety of workshops. Nooney Farm also produces over 2,000 pounds of produce for local food pantries. Amy donates a portion of all registration fees to the farm.

RAIN DATE: AUGUST 27, 1-5.

50% refund until two days before the workshop. No refunds are provided after this timeframe.

Nooney Farm 2025 Workshop Supply List

Amy Brnger

22 Stevenson Road, Kittery, Maine

This is an outside painting workshop on a working land trust farm.  There is a good parking lot and a port-o-potty! You will need to be able to manage your materials and walk them up and down a short hill (bringing a wagon isn’t a bad idea).

Materials List (for oil painters–if using other materials, edit as necessary)

• Paper Towels / rags (VIVA multi cloth is my favorite)

• Portable easel of your choice.  Practice setting this up at home!  You want one that you can attach or set your palette on.  You don’t want to hold your palette in your hand for hours, trust me.

Having an easel umbrella is awesome.  Can be handy. Definitely have a hat and sun protection.

• Gessoed wood panels, linen panels, stretched canvas, or gesso primed paper (any size you feel comfortable working in, but have some smaller ones on hand).  Rectangles are great, but feel free to include some squares.  Size is based on personal preference.  I also ALWAYS bring panels with rejected images on them, and a piece of sandpaper.  It’s a great way to use up old materials.  I generally use them for end of day, quick paintings (and to use up the paint on my palette).  I will be using either Raymar linen panels or Ampersand Museum panels.

**If you like toned grounds, prepare your substrates before you come.  Apply a very thin layer of india yellow, venetian red, or raw sienna, thinned with a little bit of odorless thinner, apply it evenly to the substrate, then gently rub off extra.  This creates a nice, lightly tinted surface that will dry quickly.

• Paint Brushes- It’s good to have a variety of brushes that range in both type and size. Brights,  Flats, and Filberts are all good. Bring what you are comfortable with!  I use mostly brights, and avoid very small brushes. Have at least one 1” brush on hand, if you can.

Palette.  If you are using a portable easel, it may come with one.  Otherwise have one that is transportable and of a size that you like.

Plastic bags for paper towel/ rags.

• Metal palette knife. Mine is approximately  3 inches long. Che Son from Italy is a nice brand.

• Paint color recommendations (but also–remember to bring what you’d like!):

If you want to use a limited palette, here is a common one: Chromatic Black — Cadmium Red Light— Quinacridone Red or Rose or Magenta–Cadmium Yellow Light — India Yellow–Ultramarine Blue— Phthalo Turquoise (VERY strong), cerulean blue (or another favorite blue)–Titanium White (large tube is best)-

Other colors that are nice to have on hand but are completely optional: gold ochre, burnt umber, mars violet, venetian red, van dyke brown, kings blue–or colors that you really like.

• The brands I prefer: Gamblin, Winsor Newton, Michael Harding oil paint

• The best student grade paint is Gamblin 1980 (avoid other student grade paints–they don’t have enough paint pigment in them and are frustrating)

• Refined linseed oil– Not needed if working in acrylic or other water based media.  8 oz is great.

• Odorless Turpenoid or Gamsol– Not needed if working in acrylic.  You’ll need at least 16-32 oz.  Better to have too much than too little.

• Covered wide mouthed jars or cups for medium and thinner. Make sure the lid seals tightly.  I like to have some tin cans on hand, too.

• Optional: view finder (you can make a homemade version with pieces of cardboard taped together)

• Small sketchbook and pencil/markers.

If you have a short bungee cord and an old grocery bag, this is a nice system to weigh down your easel if it is windy!  We can find rocks to put in the bag.

Have a beach wagon, backpack, sturdy box or 5 gallon pails (such as from Home Depot, Lowes) to keep supplies in–I have found the pail to be a really nice way to tote around my plein air materials.

Clothing and Car:

In my trunk, I always have a jacket and sweater that I don’t mind getting paint on.  Plus a big apron.  And junky, warm shoes/boots.  I also have a hat and open fingered gloves in addition to my latex gloves.  You are going to get paint everywhere.  Always have sunscreen, water, and snacks.

I also keep large pieces of cardboard/painting drop cloth/plastic in my trunk when it is time to transport the paintings. This has saved me a lot of cleaning time with my cars!
